The King of the Golden River, by John Ruskin
A Story Loved and Often Retold by Alan Chadwick
Along with The Emperor and the Seer and The Nightingale, The King of the Golden River was one of Alan Chadwick's favorites in his repertoire of fairy tales. Alan had memorized the basic story-line and would perform it in a theatrical manner and in his own words. It captured his sense of morality and faith in a universal justice. An audio recording of Alan telling this fable can be found in the collection of his lectures delivered at New Market, Virginia, in 1979.
